The astronomers studied a group of about 70 O stars both solitary and in pairs, known as binaries, in six sections near the Milky Way. Carefully analyzing the light emanating from them, the team found that three quarters of all O-type stars are in binary systems, a greater proportion to what we previously thought. They also found that the proportion of these pairs that are close enough to interact through stellar mergers or mass transfer calls star vampire, is also greater than imagined by leading to profound implications for the understanding of evolution of the galaxy. | |
