A dismissed worker shot dead a former work colleague outside the building Empire State Building in New York before being killed in a shootout with police that also left nine wounded.
Some of the wounded were shot and others touched by fully achieved, but none appeared to have injuries that endanger his life, authorities said, they admitted they could have wounded by gunfire from agents.
The shooting began outside the entrance of the Empire State Building overlooking Fifth Avenue at 9 am, an hour to spend tens of passers by and when businesses are opening their shutters, said Police Chief New York.
The assailant, feminine accessories designer Jeffrey Johnson, 58, who had been fired from his job a year ago, fired three shots at the store manager he worked, said police chief Raymond Kelly.
Both had traded accusations of abuse when Johnson worked there, Kelly said, quoted by CNN.
Johnson left the place after the attack, but a construction worker chased him and told the police.
Images of security cameras captured the moment when Johnson reached into a bag and pulled out a pistol and pointed it at the officers, who drew their own weapons and shot the man, killing him, Kelly said.
The police fired 14 shots, said Kelly, while the New York mayor, Michael Bloomberg, admitted that some of the nine wounded could have been hit by police gunfire.
The shooting near one of the major tourist attractions of the city generated immediate fears of a terrorist attack, but authorities ruled out of the building and a guard said the shooting did not affect the parts of the building where tourists gather to visit the skyscraper .
